Mediothek Afghanistan
How does Mediothek promote peace and democracy in Afghanistan?

Mediothek's approach is to use modern concepts of peace building, traditional Afghan methods of conflict resolution, participation as well as having a deep understanding of the cultural and psychological effects of the war in the Afghan context.
Mediothek seeks to provide the following with its help of its community centers and media work:

1. Strengthen civil society structures

2. Raise political and cultural awareness

3. Promote democratic values and a culture of tolerance and non-violence

4. Provide platforms for peaceful interaction and debate

5. Enable youth to develop skills needed in an open society

6. Encourage people to participate in the current political process

The Mediothek has a strong decentralized structure that allows the community centers in the different provinces to respond flexibly to the local needs and sensibilities. Executive Mediothek staff are locally respected personalities. This approach ensures that Mediothek enjoys a high level of trustworthiness and that the organization can make use of a strong network of social ties in the area.

Who are our target groups?

In general, Mediothek cooperates with all those groups and individuals who are willing to work towards a democratic and peaceful Afghanistan. These include civil society activists and opinion leaders like teachers, mullahs, journalists and officials.

The target groups vary according to the local conditions. For example, in rural areas like Chak-e Wardak and Behsood, Mediothek works mainly with farmers. The possibilities of women's programs are limited in these areas, since women hardly leave their houses. In Kunduz, most of Mediothek's projects are directed towards youth and women and in Kabul and Jalalabad, Mediothek mainly works with democratic activists, artists, intellects and journalists.
