What is Mediothek? Mediothek Afghanistan promotes peace building in five provinces of Afghanistan and is dedicated to rebuilding the fabric of Afghan society destroyed by decades of war. Mediothek’s projects are based on the premises that peace and democracy are complex cultural processes that do not end with elections and peace accords. A functioning civil society plays a crucial role in the process of consolidating peace; therefore Mediothek seeks to strengthen civil society by its projects; community development, peace building and media production • The community Development activities are to develop active and sustain able communities based on peaceful interaction, social justice, continuous learning, and mutual respect. • The media programs and publication produced by media house nawbahar is aimed at raising political and cultural awareness. How does Mediothek work? Mediothek's approach is informed by modern concepts of peace building, by traditional Afghan methods of conflict resolution and participation as well as by a deep understanding of the cultural and psychological effects of the war in the specific Afghan context. Mediothek was founded in Germany by exile Afghans and German experts of Afghanistan in 1993. According to the changing needs of the country during and after the war the focus of Mediothek changed: from preserving the cultural heritage, school projects, and academic initiatives in the 1990s to peace building activities to support the Petersberg Process.
